Today, Bob Nicholson came out and said Tobias Rieder is the reason the Oilers are not making the playoffs and that Tobias will not be back next season. Tobias was seriously offended, and I don't blame him. But hold on a second. Even though that may be true who hired Tobias? It was the manager Peter Chiarelli whom Bob Nicholson hired so ultimately it is Bob's fault for hiring a dud. Tobias is doing the best he can do. If you wanted better performance you should have gotten a better player.
The data tells us Tobias should never have been acquired with a plus/minus career of -67. Now look at his stats; he is where he should be.

Tobias has never had a positive +/- season. In order to generate 21 points in 2014/15 he needed a plus/minus of -19. In order to generate 37 points in 2015/16 he needed a +/- of -21. In 2016/17 he needed a -8 to generate 34 points. In 2017/18 he needed -12 to get to 25 points. In 2018/19 he is currently -7 for 11 points in 60 games and zero goals.
All else being equal, Tobias has improved his +/- at the sacrifice of producing less goals. You can have one or the other, but you can't have both. Tobias is performing as you would expect given his stats. Bob Nicholson is an IDIOT! I would rather have no goals and a better +/- than lots of points and a horrible +/-.
The reward system in the Oilers is twisted rewarding players with contracts to get more points rather than playing a two way game of a better +/-.
Oilers management do not care about statistics because they never took statistics in school.
