Are they awake? No, they are asleep. The saved who sleep are asleep. The unsaved who sleep are asleep. They are not in Hell yet. Nor are the saved in heaven yet. They are asleep.
"For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him" (1 Thess. 4.14).
God will bring with him, but hasn't don't so yet.
