The KJV Romans 1.1 reads, "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called [to be] an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God," but this is wrong since Paul is already an Apostle.

The correct rendering is "...called apostle," not "called to be an apostle".

The NASB version sorta got it right: "called {as} an apostle". Darby's was right on: "called apostle".

Similarly in verse 7, "to all that are called in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints" we see the same problem. The correct translation is "called saints"-which means called as saints, not called to be saints. They are beloved of God already, so that is why they are saints already.

For someone called to be a saint in God's foreknowledge is His foreseeing that person's consent to choose the cross; that is why they are called. God does NOT call people to be saints irrrespective of their choice, but because He foresees their choice; NOT because he saves them first to cause them to believe. It doesn't work that way. He saves afterward.
