Be careful reading Col. 2.23 by itself without reading the preceding verses.

"Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh" (Col. 2.23 KJV).

If one reads this at face value they might think there is wisdom in will worship, humility and denying the body, and in so doing, not giving honor to satisfying the flesh. But that is not what this verse means.

"These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires" (NLT).

"Shew of..." (KJV) seems positive, but "seem wise" (NLT) indicates a negative tone. Clearly "they provide no help" (NLT) is the intent rather than by doing these things "not in any honor to satisfy..." (KJV).
