144,000 is a time stamp of the when the "new song" (true gospel) would appear
1 year = 1 day = 24 hours in prophecy

Nebuchadnezzar's false image of God is a time stamp to the feet, or stone that cleans the image

Nebuchadnezzar's image is a picture of the fall of Adam to the cleansing of the image in the feet which we are in now.
The reason it is a new song is two aspects:
1) the Lord newly died so men are redeemed,
"And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation" (Rev. 5.9).
and 2) 144,000 are brought home first,
"And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth" (Rev. 14.3).
Overcomers are not all believers just those who were watchful, prayerful, and kept the word of His patience and can include martyrs. All men overcometh just not at the same time.
My Life Application Study Bible says 144 cubits equals 65 meters so one cubit equals 17.7 inches not 20 inches.
Nothing happened in the year 2000.

Daniel 9.24 says, "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy."
Where has there been an end of transgressions and sins; reconciliation and everlasting righteousness; the 7th seal opened; or the Temple in Jerusalem to annoint?

When I think about the 144,000 being derived from 6000 years it's telling me the completion, consummation and pinnacle is reached with the number of 144,000; that is to say, once God finds His 144,000 virgin firstfruits believers (Rev. 14.1-5) then the first rapture takes place according to readiness (Rev. 3.10, 12.5 at 7.9 "before the throne"). That is not to say there are only 144,000 saved.
