"Ye know that ye...carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led" (1 Cor. 12.2).

The word monotheism (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/monotheism) is derived from the Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greek) μόνος (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%CE%BC%CF%8C%CE%BD%CE%BF%CF%82) meaning "single" and θεός (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%CE%B8%CE%B5%CF%8C%CF%82) meaning "God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_(male_deity))". If God is gods then God is not single in the true sense of the meaning.

The concept sees a gradual development out of notions of henotheism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henotheism) (worshiping a single god while accepting the existence or possible existence of other deities) and monolatrism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolatrism) (the recognition of the existence of many gods, but with the consistent worship of only one deity). Substance monotheism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Substance_monotheism), found in some indigenous African religions, holds that the many gods are different forms of a single underlying substance.

Satan's working hard. But what does God have to say? First off, Jews today who reject Christ still hold to One Being in Monotheism, so for you to come along and say they never held to One uncreated Being, seems dishonest and disingenuous. Judaism is one of the oldest known monotheistic faiths. The best-known Jewish statements of monotheism occur in the Shema (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shema_Yisrael) prayer, the Ten Commandments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments) and Maimonides (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maimonides)' 13 Principles of faith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_principles_of_faith#Maimonides.27_13_princi ples_of_faith), Second Principle:

God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God), the Cause of all, is one. This does not mean one as in one of a pair, nor one like a species (which encompasses many individuals), nor one as in an object that is made up of many elements, nor as a single simple object that is infinitely divisible. Rather, God is a unity unlike any other possible unity. This is referred to in the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4): "Hear Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD is one."
"Well, we all know that an idol is not really a god and that there is only one God and no other" (1 Cor. 8.4). There is no other! Men are called gods because they have the knowledge of good and evil like God. Don't read into it more than that. There are many claims, as well, of being gods, but they are just claims.

Jesus said, "I and the Father are one" being (John 10.30), "one Lord" (Deut.6.4) "from everlasting to everlasting" (Ps. 90.2). "Believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him" (John 10.38) proves that the Father and the Son are One Being. God would never have said this if the Father and Son were of different substance and separate beings.

1 Corinthians 8:5 - “For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many)”

Mormons will use this verse to prove that there are a plurality of Gods in the universe. It is amazing to see how a religious group can pull one verse right out of the text to establish a doctrine and blatantly ignore the immediate context. If they were to read verse 4 they would see that it clearly states “that there is none other God but one”. How can we reconcile this seeming contradiction? Easy. Paul was writing to the Gentile believers regarding food sacrificed to idols. The idea is that although idols are called gods by their Pagan worshippers, they are not true Gods, but false ones. There is only one true God.

Here are a few scriptural beauties that you want to have in your arsenal when dealing with a Mormon on the subject of Polytheism:
-Isaiah 43:10 – “Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.”

-Isaiah 44:6 – “Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of Hosts; I am the first and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

-Isaiah 44:8 – “….Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.”

I like to ask a Mormon, “What if God told you that you can’t become a God; would you believe him?” Have him then read Isaiah 43:10. Also, “if God had a father who was a God, would he know him?” When he says yes, let him read Isaiah 44:8.

Ezekiel 37:16-17 – “Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: And join the one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.”

This verse is often sited to prove that there is Biblical evidence for the Book of Mormon. They will say that the stick of Judah is the Bible, and the stick of Joseph is the Book of Mormon. However, the two sticks mentioned here have nothing to do with the Bible or the Book of Mormon. The two sticks are clearly explained in verses 21 and 22 as representing two nations. These are the Southern Kingdom of Israel, which is named Judah since this tribe occupied the bulk of the southern land, and the Northern Kingdom, which is named Joseph here to represent the two tribes who occupied the majority of the northern land, Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of Joseph.

Mormons misunderstand Christians I noticed. Christians believe 1) Jesus is the Son of God by birth. He was not the Son before birth, but He did always exist. 2) We find usefulness in creeds but they are not necessary. 3) God is always spirit. You will never see the face of the Father, but the Son you will see, for they agreed the Son would manifest Himself. 4) Christians believe the Spirit was revealed as a Person in the Old Testament, but this is an exception to the rule, when the 3 men came to Abraham. The Person of the Spirit is for indwelling. 5) I am a Christian made in the image of God physically, soulically and spiritually with my spirit, soul and body. 6) Jesus never had a physical image prior to incarnation, nor was He a spirit filling everything; rather, He was the uncreated 2nd Person of the Trinity who brought everything into existence with the Father and the Spirit. 7) Absolutely, Jesus is a distinct Person from the Father, and always was so though not separate for Godhead is one Being.
